Section Objective: To recruit more members and to develop future educational and research leaders in the field
Our webmaster Carol Perryman updated the MLES website. Our chair-elect Michelynn McKnight planned two sessions for the 2008 annual meeting. The Section supported the Section Shuffle at the Annual Meeting and will participate in the event. Additional membership promotion activities were undertaken by the section’s Membership Chair, Charles Greenberg
The following officers were elected
Ana Cleveland, Chair Elect
James Andrews, Nominee to the MLA Nominating Committee
Section Objective: Promote and use the recently revised MLA Educational and Research Policy Statements to analyze the current curriculum offerings in library and information science programs
One of our sessions at the annual meeting entitled Only Connect: Linking Research to Practice will focus on the Research Policy statement and the other on the Educational Policy Statement. The Research Policy statement will include an invited paper by Michelynn McKnight that examines the curricula of LIS programs in the research area as well as several research papers by new entrants to the field
The other session at the annual meeting entitled Only Connect: Linking Education to Practice will include an invited paper by Joanne Marshall that examines the curricula of LIS programs in the health sciences and related competencies identified in the policy statement. The session will include a respondent panel representing MLA leaders, educators and practitioners
Section Objective: Promote the educational and research competencies of medical library and information professionals
Section Objective: To provide a forum for the presentation of high quality educational and research papers. The activities described under advocacy also related to creating and communicating our knowledge.
Section Objective: To promote the continuing connection of medical librarians with their library and information science master’s programs and to enhance the LIS reunion organized by MLES at the annual meeting
MLES has a long standing history of organizing the LIS Reunion at the annual meeting. Gale Dutcher is transitioning out of this role after many years of service and Steven MacCall is taking over. The Section recommended that Gale Dutcher be sent a letter of thanks by MLA for her great contribution in organizing the LIS reunion. Gale will receive a letter and also be recognized at the 2008 Business Meeting. The reunion continues to be a popular event that reconnects MLA members with their master’s programs, promotes networking among MLA members, and reinforces the connection of LIS educators to the association. The reunion also supports MLA through the Section’s annual communication with the LIS master’s programs and gaining their financial support for the reunion
Steven has worked with MLA HQ to enhance the location, refreshments and other support provided for 2008 reunion at the annual meeting. The Section plans to work closely with HQ in coming years to monitor the support received for the reunion and to make the event better than ever.
This report is informational and requires no action by the Board of Directors.
